PAYING IT FORWARD

Paying it forward can give you the opportunity to make a difference in your community. Learn more about giving back.

Change the World by Paying It Forward

In a world where it may seem like humanity has lost itself and many people are too concerned about themselves, the need to pay it forward has never been greater than it is today. Something as simple as buying a cup of coffee for someone who needs the warmth can make the greatest difference in one’s life. Paying it forward not only helps make a difference and can have a positive effect on your success professionally, but it also shows that people still care about the communities we live in.

The term “pay it forward” was coined in 1951 and became more popular after the film of the same name was released in 2000. It continues to gain momentum and is something I’m passionate about. Keep reading to explore the current state of paying it forward and what it means to the world. You may just be inspired to pay it forward yourself.

A Modern-Day Example: The Giving Pledge

Backed by Bill and Melinda Gates, two extremely motivational businesspeople who founded this non-profit in 2010, The Giving Pledge has had a powerful effect on the world of giving. With the formation of The Giving Pledge, 40 of the world’s wealthiest professionals agreed to give away half of their wealth. This is one action that deserves its place in the history books.

This is a group of people who truly understand that giving back to the world is the only way we can change it. It ensures that those who aren’t as fortunate as some of us get the opportunity to better their lives. Not to mention, it creates unity and inspires others to do what they can to help as well.

Employees Donating Time

Over recent years, companies have increased their donations, and employees have put in the time free of charge to ensure that good causes continue to live on. This is something that proves the world is still a wondrous place, and it’s an amazing way to build a bond with your colleagues.

Each year, the amount of time donated by employees continues to rise. This is especially important to millennials entering the workforce now and will become a differentiator for companies that want to attract and keep the best talent in their organizations.

How Can Your Business Pay It Forward?

Try thinking outside of the box on this one. If you have a coffee shop, think about providing the homeless with a steaming cup on those cold winter days. What you do to pay it forward doesn’t have to be a major event. Even a simple gesture of kindness can go a long way. Others are doing it, so why not you? Paying it forward may lead to more gratification, as well as personal and professional growth, than you’d ever expect.

I’ve made paying it forward and positive thinking a cornerstone in my professional and personal life.
